Decrypt BDA's efforts behind Olympics' closing ceremony

Updated: 2022-03-01

The closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics marked the successful end of the event. Beijing Long March Tianmin Hi-tech Co.,Ltd., an enterprise in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area (BDA), was the "backstage hero" that created the stage for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.

The Winter Olympic rings are actually only half the size of the rings at the 2008 Summer Olympics, but the battery and control system have been greatly improved. The 2008 rings appeared for less than five minutes, while the Winter Olympics rings were suspended for no less than one hour.

How was this achieved? The Long March Tianmin Winter Olympics project team injected aerospace technology into the closing ceremony.

Adopting the design idea of a new generation of launch vehicles, the battery system consists of two sets of subsystems, which provide no less than 60 minutes of uninterrupted power supply for the LED and broadcast control systems in the five rings.

As the largest open-air stadium stage in China, the LED floor screen area of the closing ceremony stage reached 11,500 square meters, which would inevitably generate a large area of signal interference, and the transmission station of the fifth ring is in a basement below the stage.

At an altitude of 25 meters from the ground, there were more than 2,000 live communication frequency bands on the day of the performance.

How to ensure that the five rings would light smoothly during the performance without signal interference? The design team chose a radio with a transmission distance of 8,000 meters, and also used an emergency manual lighting button to add a redundant design to the stage system, making it as foolproof as a space launch.

In addition, adhering to the tenet of holding the event in a simple manner, the central lifting platform on the ground that was used during the Snowflake Torch debut was used again on the stage of the closing ceremony.
