As the "one zone" in "three cities and one zone", the major platform for national technological innovation in Beijing, BDA aims at creating a science and technology innovation ecosystem of global impact, and has established a technological innovation system that is company-centered, market-oriented, and deeply integrates industry, universities and research institutes. 

BDA brings together 1,122 national-level high-tech corporations, 26 national R&D institutes, 26 technology innovation centers, 13 industrial pilot bases, and 19 incubators. It undertakes 66 National Science and Technology Major Projects, and possesses 462 utility patents per 10,000 people, outperforming every other district in Beijing. Five national incubators and seven national maker spaces are born here. The innovation centers have applied for 14 National Science and Technology Major Projects. And with a total of 40,000 converted patent applications, patent conversion rate of the area is the highest in the city. 

Paramount importance has been attached to human resources development. An one-billion-RMB fund is committed annually to support talents cultivation. Up to now, the area boasts over 270,000 high-caliber professionals, among whom there are 38 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 3,700 international scholars, 2 national-level and 6 municipal-level candidates in the "New Century National Hundred Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project", and 9 winners of Beijing Special Contribution Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Overseas Talents.
