With the densest crowd of innovative groups in China, Beijing is reinforcing its leading role in technological innovation nationwide, according to a recent report.

The report, released by data processing company Ba Yue Gua, surveyed enterprises, colleges and research institutes in different Chinese cities regarding their scientific and technological innovation capabilities.

Of the top 500 tech businesses in China, 109 are from Beijing, ranking the city first, according to the report.

Shenzhen in Guangdong province, with 64 tech companies on the list, and Shanghai, with 45 on the list, held second and third place respectively.

The Beijing group of 109 companies has performed strongly in intellectual property activities. Their combined patents granted by the authorities account for more than 30 percent of the total of the top 500 players on the list. Their contribution to the total of overseas patent applications filed via the Patent Cooperation Treaty surpassed 20 percent, which demonstrates their international competitiveness.

Of the 109 businesses, nearly half are State-owned enterprises, including 30 in the nation's top 100 list. Most of them are involved in national pillar industries such as energy, power, transportation, aerospace and telecommunications.

This can be attributed to SOEs' long-term investment in research and innovation, talent cultivation and academic exchange, Beijing Daily reported.

Seventy-seven, or more than 70 percent, of the Beijing businesses on the list are publicly listed companies. Among them is BOE, which ranks among the top three in the report.

With prominent achievements in scientific and technological innovation in the semiconductor industry, BOE has become an industry leader.

In addition, a large number of enterprises such as leading tech companies Baidu, Xiaomi, Lenovo and the internet company Byte-Dance are in prominent places, which showcases the driving force of scientific and technological innovation.

It is also worth noting that 89 of the Beijing companies are "little giant businesses". This honor is generally granted to businesses that are innovation-driven, have core technologies and high market shares, and focus on niche sectors.

On the top 500 list, 16 operations affiliated with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp and 13 under China Railway Rolling Stock Corp are such companies.

Centering on professional development strategies, they have explored the industrial chain and accumulated core technologies in their specialized fields.

Apart from businesses, Beijing has 11 universities and 27 research institutions ranking in the top 50 of their category, adding rich innovation resources to the city.
