Centuries-old official ramming songs bring history to life

Updated: 2024-02-23

"Spring brings fragrant grass to the terrace. A hundred flowers bloom, filling the land with fragrance. Golden-threaded willows line the riverbanks, mandarin ducks swim on both sides of the water. Fishermen dry their nets on the sandy shores, geese return and swallows flutter by…"

This excerpt from the official ramming songs of Majuqiao town in Beijing E-Town New Area brings two centuries of history to life.

Its words are poetic, its melody theatrical, evoking vivid scenes that transport listeners through time.

Originating from the imperial courts, it found popularity among the common folk. Accompanied by the songs of craftsmen when ramming walls, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Long Corridor of the Summer Palace were built, as were the bridges, roads, and large tile-roofed houses on Xihou street in Majuqiao town.

"The melodious and captivating tunes of the official ramming songs, with their intricate and fascinating stories, arouse increasing interest with each listener. It is a cultural heritage of immense artistic value." Wang Liang, an actor of the official ramming song, is the sixth generation inheritor of the tradition, having started learning from his master at the age of 12.

"The official ramming songs originated more than 600 years ago at Beijing's Xinglong Timber Factory. The factory was founded by Ma Tianlu during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).”

"The ramming songs were born out of the labor of ramming. Its strong rhythm allows the labors to exert consistent force, alleviating fatigue and boosting morale." Wang added.

In recent years, the official ramming songs have gradually stepped onto larger stages for bigger performances, providing Wang with more opportunities to showcase their talents, and seeing the performance teams grow in size.

This is not only due to the strong support from Xihou street village and Majuqiao town but also the mutual support from the official ramming songs and stilt-walking associations of Xihou street village.

The intertwined official ramming songs and stilt-walking associations are the cultural soul and priceless treasures of Xihou street village. They will be protected and passed on.
